Manage Stress and Pain This Festive Season

The Festive season is magical, but let’s be real—they can be PHYSICALLY demanding! Are you noticing new aches, stiffness, or low-level pain? You’re not imagining it!

Here’s why your body might be speaking up right now:

  • Stress & Tension: Financial pressures, busy social calendars, and endless to-do lists trigger your body’s “fight-or-flight” response. Stress hormones lead to muscle tension, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back, which can cause soreness or even tension headaches.
  • Postural Strain & Lifting: Activities like lifting heavy decorations, furniture, or Christmas trees, as well as prolonged periods of cooking or wrapping gifts, can strain muscles and compromise posture. This often leads to back and joint aches..
  • Routine Disruption & Inactivity: Your regular gym session or daily walk gets skipped for holiday tasks. This reduced movement, especially with darker evenings and colder weather making us want to “hibernate,”reduces natural joint lubrication and causes stiffness.
  • Cold Weather Impact: Lower temperatures can cause muscles to tighten and stiffen. Our bodies naturally try to conserve heat, which can reduce blood flow to joints and extremities, often increasing existing pain and sensitivity.
  • Dietary Changes & Inflammation: Christmas’s sugary treats, rich foods, and alcohol can contribute to systemic inflammation in the body, which worsens aches, pains, and arthritis symptoms.

✨ Your Festive Body Check-In:

  1. Mindful Movement: When lifting, use your legs, not your back. When wrapping or cooking, take frequent breaks to change your position and stretch.
  2. Stop and Stretch: Instead of powering through, take a 5-minute break to stretch your shoulders, roll your neck, and stand up from that prolonged sitting position.
  3. Schedule “Me-Time” Movement: Can’t do an hour? Try a brisk 15-minute walk in/out doors or a simple yoga video. Your body craves oxygenated blood flow and movement!
  4. Hydrate & Nourish: Counter those rich foods with plenty of water, fruits, and vegetables to help reduce inflammation.
  5. Prioritise Rest: Sleep is your body’s chance to repair muscle and reduce overall pain sensitivity. Protect your downtime!

This season, remember that caring for your physical body is as important as all the festive prep. Be kind, move well, eat mindfully, and listen closely to what your body is trying to tell you.
