Mat-based Pilates is a low-impact exercise designed to build functional, whole-body strength. Using controlled, precise movements, it targets the deep core muscles, including your abdominals, pelvic floor, back, hips, and pelvis.

By strengthening this central foundation, Pilates dramatically improves how your body moves in everyday life. It enhances joint stability and flexibility, balances out muscle imbalances, and promotes proper spinal alignment. This leads to better posture, smoother movement patterns, greater coordination and improved balance which together help reduce daily strain on your joints and lower’s your risk of injury.

Pilates is based on 6 key principles:

  1. Centering: Moving from the “powerhouse” (Our core muscles). Every movement originates from a stable center to support the spine and limbs.
  2. Control: Executing every motion with deliberate, conscious muscular control rather than momentum.
  3. Concentration: Bringing full mental awareness to every movement. Focusing on which muscles are working creates a strong mind-body connection and improves motor control.
  4. Precision: Prioritising quality of movement over quantity. Executing fewer repetitions with proper alignment creates better results than many repetitions done poorly.
  5. Breath: Pilates exercises are complete on the exhale, using deep diaphragmatic breathing to oxygenate the muscles, and coordinate movement of the diaphragm & pelvic floor. As the diaphragm lifts on the exhale to push the air out of our lungs, the pelvic floor and deep core muscles engage.
  6. Flow: Connecting exercises with smooth, fluid, and continuous movement so energy transitions seamlessly from one posture to the next.

Ultimately, Mat Pilates trains your body to move with efficiency, power, and ease. Whether you want to lift your shopping without strain, sit with better posture, or perform at a higher athletic level, building deep functional strength through Pilates provides the physical control needed to keep you moving comfortably for the long run.

See you on the Mat!
